The Basics of Laser Hair Removal

The laser beam heats the hair follicle to its root destroying it permanently preventing any regrowth. A couple days later, the destroyed base of the root is expulsed. The target of the laser treatment is the melanin in the hair. The darker the hair is, the more laser energy is absorbed and the more effective the treatment will be. Dark hair is the easiest to remove. The shade of your hair determines the number of hair removal sessions. Only 20 percent of hair is destroyed during each session because only the hairs in the initial stages of growth are destroyed. This explains why several sessions are necessary. After 4 to 6 sessions, there is a 95% efficiency rate. Hair resistant to treatment tends only to be light baby hairs.

How the Session Takes Place

First, a preliminary test is performed on a small area of your skin. The patient and esthetician must wear eye gear to protect the eyes from the laser beam.

The treatment can last up to 10 minutes to over an hour depending on the extent of the treatment.

Precautions to be taken before and after the session

Protect the skin from the sun for four weeks before and after each session. If you are prone to herpes labialis and you plan to undergo an upper lip hair removal treatment, an antiviral medication can be prescribed.

In order for the skin to be ready for treatment, make sure to stop any kind of waxing or tweezing or discoloration.

In exception of the face, the patient should be shaved 24 hours before the appointment. The sensation during the session can be described as a tingling or an elastic band slap . With new cooling device, The GentleMaxPro is effective in relieving uncomfortable sensations. For more sensitive skins, it is possible to use a topical anesthetic such as Emla.

Within 15 to 120 minutes after the session, your skin will be red and warm which can be relieved by moisturizers. The following 3 to 10 days, the hair is destroyed and eventually sheds off. Â It is advised to avoid sun exposure 15 days following the sessions

Timing and number of sessions

Laser treatment is effective on hair growth during the first part of the phase called anagen. Up to 20% of hairs are destroyed in each session. Treatments are spaced an average of 4 to 6 weeks apart when hair growth becomes visible. Depending on the area being treated, the number of sessions is around 5 to 10, with an average of 6 sessions.

The areas that RECEIVE treatment the most are :

  • The upper lip,
  • Armpits,
  • Back,
  • Bikini area,
  • Legs
